A special piece of Dutch toy history: this SIO Caltex Garage from around 1965 is a rare and completely preserved model with original details such as the light box with Caltex logo and the iconic Michelin tire advertisement on a stand. A unique object that perfectly captures the atmosphere of the street scene from the sixties. Made by Sio (Speelgoed Industrie Overijssel) around 1965.
What makes this garage special is that the original Michelin light box and the advertising column with the tire have been preserved. The garage is made of wood and plastic including the pumps, ramp, Caltex advertising column and 1 floor as a showroom. SIO was a leading Dutch toy manufacturer in the 50s and 60s.
The SIO garages were popular because of their realistic representation of the street scene at the time. The collaboration with Caltex, one of the major oil brands of that time, gave these models a recognizable appearance. The fact that this garage is also equipped with a Michelin advertising stand makes the object all the more unique. It reflects the authentic combination of brands as found at petrol stations in the 1960s. The light box, intended to illuminate the Michelin logo, was a luxury detail for that time and is now a sought-after feature among collectors. Together with the separate Michelin stand, which has rarely been preserved, this forms a complete and extremely valuable set.
